Lou Reed & Metallica Present: LuLu

This review will start out simply saying Good Grief, Good Grief, GOOOODDD FREEEAAAAKKIINNGG GGRIEF.

That’s putting it nicely. This album is so damn terrible, I can’t even laugh at how terrible it is. Apparently, I’m not alone either. If I was a betting man, I’d bet that 9 out of 10 people think this album is shit on a shit covered plate.

Honestly, I know it’s supposed to be this big “theatrical stage like” experience in an album. Ha! I’d rather go to the Opera Hungover. (And I don’t even get hangovers)  I’d rather have 20 sick kittens puke on me then listen to this album from start to finish in it’s entirety.

What in the world was Metallica thinking when they agreed to do an album with this burnout Lou Reed? Sure, he was good in his day, but he sounds just awful on this album. The Music isn’t terrible, I mean it’s nothing fancy, but it does at least sound sortof Metallica-ish.

Lou Reed doesn’t even “sing”. Like he could before, but this time around he didn’t even try.  It’s completely spoken. WOW that’s exciting.

Sad thing is, I heard a rumor they were talking about doing another one. PLEASE DON’T.  One is bad enough.

However, this new phase going around saying that “Metallica’s new album is TERRIBLE” along with something Megadethy is really getting quite old.  This isn’t a new “Metallica” album, it’s a Lou Reed & Metallica Compilation album. Very different folks.

I don’t even have a rating system but I’m about to create one just for this album.

I give it NEGATIVE 13 CORNCOBS OUT OF 3000.

That’s right, my new rating system just for this album is corn cobs.  No, it won’t stick — so don’t worry.

Guitar Hero: Metallica – Reviewed.

I know that I post a lot about Metallica, but hey, they are my favorite band — I’m going to do that.

A few days ago I purchased a copy of Guitar Hero: Metallica (as if you didn’t see that coming), and I got to say – I’m impressed. It follows the realm of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in that it focuses mainly on the band it’s made for, with some side acts “hand picked” by Metallica. It’s basically Guitar Hero: World Tour – with a Metallica punch.

Is it just me or did he drop about 200lbs ?

Is it just me or did he drop about 200lbs ?

You can tell that a lot of time and dedication was put into this game, first off just by playing the first couple of songs on career, which are “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Unforgiven”. If you’ve seen Metallica live, then you’ll be able to tell that they have perfectly replicated Metallica’s performance on stage.  I could write a 10-page essay on how they have captured their live performance flawlessly, but that’s not what this review is about, and I doubt you’d read it.

Some of things you’ll notice that’s different from this game and all other Guitar Hero titles, is how career mode is played. You are Metallica Jr., a band who saw an Ad that Metallica is looking for an opening act. Your first band members consist of two 80′s Hair metal stereotypes (along with two normal rockers), who get kicked out for two righteously heavy metal freaks who join your band permanently. On the way to the audition, you are almost thwarted by a Hair Metal band (the games story line is a hiliarious stab at hair metal, btw) until your van plows into the side of the band, and James gives the devil’s  horns to show the approval to perform as their opening act. From there, it’s history…

Rather than having (here is the big difference) to perform setlist after setlist in order to keep rising up, you just need to achieve a certain number of performance stars to gain a new setlist. Which, after you’ve played threw the first few setlists and got at least 4 stars or higher on all of them, you’ll have every song unlocked on Career mode. The very last song (Spoiler Alert) is The Thing That Should Not Be, which you will play in a new stage, called the Ice Cave, which is a underground permafrost wasteland inhabited by what looks to be a giant octopus-type monster. I’m guessing that’s the thing that should not be?

In another note, most everyone’s fear with this game was that it was a Metallica game  – and that the songs by Metallica were all going to be rediculiously hard when played on Expert. Come to find out, some of the hardest songs have been dumbed down and the solos not as extreme as you would think. Of course, as you progress through the songs – they do get harder, and some of them are that old familiar “It’s too damn hard!” — But it’s not to discourage you, because if you play Expert amazingly, then you’ll do just fine. As I did.

You'll find out that all his guitars are in this one!

You'll find out that all his guitars are in this one!

Battle mode is back in action, just when a few Metallica-ized tweaks.  “Amp Overload” is now called “Ride the Lightning”, “Broken String” is now called “Damage Inc.”, “Broken Whammy” is now called “Trapped Under Ice”, and there is a new attack too – it’s called “Fade to Black” – which blackens out everything on your fretboard (also called highway). Which, if you are opposing someone who is playing on the same difficulty, you just watch their screen for a bit and go on. (Unless, of course, you’ve already double noted, and/or blackened their screen) Mines are a very interesting attack too, certain notes turn gray and you must miss them (on purpose – it won’t affect your score) or they explode on impact and your rock meter takes a quick turn for the worse.

King Diamond and Lemmy make appearances on this game, as promised, along with all your favored Guitar Hero characters.

Another really cool feature that they’ve thrown in (I know it was kind of in GH:WT, but it’s different – I  promise) is the ESP Custom Guitar shop. Finally, you can hand design your very own ESP guitar, and play it live! If only you could literally take it home with you…

King Diamond you crazy son of a bitch.

King Diamond you crazy son of a bitch.

Oh, and I can’t not mention this:  There is a cheat to turn Metallica into either 80′s Metallica (literally) or Zombie Metallica. Simply go into the cheats menu and strum this:  Green, Red, Yellow, Blue(2), Yellow, Red, Green. Another little hint: You unlock characters by achieving so many stars in certain categories. I.E.: 100 vocal stars for James Hetfield.

Other than that, even if you don’t like Metallica and just love Guitar Hero, you need to get a copy of this game because I believe 100% that it’s the best Guitar Hero game that is out on the market to date. And it’s not even because I love Metallica (which I do, very much), it’s  because of all the time that put into this game. Everything is so smooth and flawless, ahh!

GO GET IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Not Much to Report

The title didn’t lie to you, I really don’t have a lot to report for this entry. Like my past few posts have been a little shady — so sue me.

All I know is I’m pumped for Guitar Hero Metallica!

Other than that…….

My Impression of Death Magnetic II

Well, in three more days the CD will finally be here. After five years of waiting, the ninth studio album by Metallica. Earlier in a post I wrote about “My Impression” of Death Magnetic. With being like every good little fan, I signed up for MissionMetallica.com and had been following the progress since May 1st.

Anyways, it turns out I’m not the good little fan I put myself up to be. At least, I’ve already heard Death Magnetic. Excuse me, but I couldn’t wait any longer. I’m a die-hard fan and the torment of the waiting was too much. It was too easy for me to get Death Magnetic. (I actually nabbed it thanks to Playlist.com — so blame them, not me)

But, yeah, I’ve listened to all the songs thoroughly and I’m pleased. If you didn’t hear it when it leaked onto YouTube thanks to a French CD Store, then you are going to be blown away by it when it drops Friday. Unforgiven III, I tell you, is really something. Not like the other Unforgivens, but that’s all I’m going to say.

And if you are like me, and wanting the full meal of Death Magnetic, then go to playlist.com. Don’t be ashamed, if nothing else just stream it. Then it just looks like an upload from your provider, not a download. (Yes, I realize it doesn’t actually upload it still downloads a temp file. Then make yourself aquainted with CCleaner.)

Good job Metallica, can’t wait to see you November 17th.

My Impression of Death Magnetic…So Far

Well, I could tell you every little aspect that I’ve heard of Death Magnetic from MissionMetallica.com; but i’m not like that.

I’m going to just write a little blurb about the two songs that have been released to the public in the past few days.

Cyanide: I really like this song, I love the way they throw in the bass. They really let Rob hold a strong part in this new album. It’s heavy, it’s got a nice break down, and it’s James’ old voice. What else can you say about this song other than awesome? The music on this song is phenomenal, I really love the way they arranged it. They have a powerful beginning, exciting break down, a powerful solo,  and an elusive yet ever-recurring chorus to finish it off. I also really like the lyrics. “Suicide, I’ve already died, it’s just the funeral I’ve been waiting for. Cyanide, feeling dead inside, break this empty shell forevermore.” It’s just amazing.

This one was first released live at Ozzfest in Dallas, TX.  Premium Mission Metallica members were able to download the whole entire show. (Which also included an awesome Mercyful Fate rendition with King Diamond singing)

Though most people aren’t big fans of songs that clock in anywhere from 7 to 8 minutes, I enjoy it. Especially when it’s a Metallica song. They always keep me entertained.

The Day That Never Comes: I first heard this song when I streamed it off of MissionMetallica.com, then I saw where they were letting Premium users download it, so I couldn’t resist. From what I understand, this was their competition/sequel to the 1991 hit “One”. The song starts out slow, just like One, then takes a quick jump into what Metallica really is. With the solos sounding just as amazing as they did on “…And Justice for All” (I’m talking about the whole Album!) Then towards the end once the lyrics have all been said it gets heavy, and I mean really heavy. I was telling people “Slayer” heavy, but it’s not that intense. It’s about as heavy as if Metallica covered Raining Blood. OK, I’m not very good at describing levels of heavy-ness, just listen to it on the radio. Be looking for the video coming out soon. (I’m hitting YouTube up every day in anticipation) Also, just like Cyanide, the lyrics in this song are outstanding. Though I don’t know for sure what the song means just yet, I’m guessing it has to do with a woman who gets beaten and she’s waiting for the day for the guy to be punished, or for her to find a man that  isn’t like her previous ones. (In other words, a good man minus the beatings)

Although I could probably write an entire short story on my impression of Death Magnetic so far, I just wanted to touch on the two songs that have been released to the public. Be sure and nab a copy of Death Magnetic in stores everywhere September 12th. Or sign up for MissionMetallica.com premium and get the CD delivered to your house at 12:01 midnight.

Metallica Confirmed Box Set

Just at the title says, Metallica confirmed the box set for their new CD, “Death Magnetic”

Death MagneticI wasn’t for sure if Blabbermouth was lieing or not, but it seems they really are coming out with one.. With quite a bit of stuff too.

For you collector types out there we just had to put together something next level when the new record comes out in the Fall . . . how about “Death Magnetic” in a coffin box? The special edition box will come out the same day the album does (we’ll tell you when that is soon . . . very soon) and will of course include the full CD (duh!), along with everything next level cool relating to “Death Magnetic!” Seriously, there will be a CD with the demos of the songs, a DVD of even more “making of the album” footage not seen on Mission: Metallica, a t-shirt only available in this box, a flag, guitar picks, and a fold out poster along with a collector’s credit card embossed with a code to redeem a free download of a special European show happening in September (yes, details coming soon!).

Hey!

Sorry I haven’t wrote anything in awhile. Been kind of busy with work, life, and things revolving around the two.
One new thing in my internet life: My web host, Vizaweb, started offering RoundCube WebMail — and I love it! It’s so much better than SquirrelMail (though SquirrelMail still has a special place in my heart), and don’t even get me started on Horde.

UNIX junkies (and just plain nerds in general) will get what I’m talking about up there.

Anywho, I’m at work now. Nothing much going on. I have been really lazy with the internet lately. I don’t update my blog, I haven’t even went to my website in awhile. It’s not that I’m getting tired of it, I just don’t find myself with very much spare time to sit down and write anything. Now that I’m at work, and I have zero customers, I thought “why not post?”. So here I am.

Something that has really had my attention lately is MissionMetallica.com – Being an extreme Metallica fan that I am, I of course signed up and pre-ordered the CD. I also saw after I did so that Metallica is going to be coming out with a box set. (Found on blabbermouth)  The only thing that bothers me about this was that I did find it on blabbermouth. They are the same people who said James Hetfield was detained at an aiport because of his “taliban-like” beard. They are notorious for believing/starting rumors.

Is it sad when somebody brings a delivery (or something related to it) that I actually enjoy signing for it? I’d probably sign my life away just to get the thrill of signing something. I’ve always been one of those types who is obsessed with their signature. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s not easy to copy either.

I really wish WordPress had a plugin that would automatically add tags from the blog you just wrote. I hate making up my own tags. I forget what I’ve typed and/or I just don’t feel like scrolling up and highlighting some of the things I wrote. Not like my page gets enough traffic to worry about it though.

That is all for now, I’m tired of typing.

MountainFives info + rants

Check out the new mountain fives HQ, http://mountainfives.mattfowler.biz (Who is this generous fellow letting M5's be hosted on his site? Nobody knows…)

Hello Vox readers, sorry that I haven't posted anything on here since August 6th..2006….I really haven't had anything interesting to write on either one of my blogs. (The other one is The Rant of One)  I think the last post on there is some general useless information about Mdfmedia.org – not trying to say that site is useless.

Metallica finally hit the shiny red recording button on March 14th, but now they are already planning another tour during the summer. I believe it is called "Sick of the Studio '07".   Come on Metallica, finish the album already… you're killing us….slowly  and painfully.

I seriously believe Family Guy is trying to get canceled. Seriously, have you seen the episode with the Prom Night Dumpster babies?  It's sad! That part wasn't even funny, and that's saying a lot coming from me — a guy who has sadly seen every episode of Family Guy and died laughing at least 3 times on every episode. (That's quite a bit of milk through my nose…)

This blog is called Vox's The Rant of One, so why not rant about Vox………. vox is cool….that's really the only rant I can think about these guys. I'm still a Blogger freak, so far Blogger hasn't given me any real reason to want to drastically switch to anything more powerful.  I  mean hell Blogger revamped there stuff and now you can re-arrange content and all that good stuff ( THANKS for doing that blogger after I already customized my own template and cannot use that function without installing one of your templates and losing all my edited stuff)

That's it, I'm tired of typing (me…tired of typing…ha!)
